RENNER SPRIINGS TO ELLIOTT - 9th September 2017
92.6 kms From Renner Springs with a population of 10 - we ended up in the town of Elliott - population 350. A pleasant ride today - and again - very thankful for the south-east wind that helped us along the way. Not many rest stops along this stretch, and with "only" 92 kms today we decided to stop at 45 kms for a break - and then go all the way to Elliott and be "in" by lunch time. It just felt like a lovely Saturday morning ride!! The roads were quiet, the wind was favourable, and it was a very easy riding day. I tried to delay things by getting a puncture on the second stage - managed to change it and just as I was putting the tyre on, along came Pat with the floor pump so I could pump it up. Even with that we got to Elliott about 11:00 am. We found our camp sites and set up, and got chatting to some lovely locals who worked at the school. I had wanted to leave some books at Elliott School but as it was a Saturday - realized school wouldn't be in. It was therefore a real delight to meet Claudette Albert - who is an amazing lady and has done many amazing things!! In her teens she played soccer for the Northern Territory and toured NZ and Tasmania with that team. She was born here in Elliott and did her early schooling here, but did Year 12 in Alice Springs. She has co-authored 2 childrens books - in her native language and English, and it was so nice for her to give us some copies to share!! We in turn gave her some of our books to take to the school - where she is currently a nutritionist and adviser. One very special lady, doing amazing work in her community. The Caravan Park is pretty dusty and it is very hot (33) - thankfully there is a breeze to cool things a bit. There are a lot of peacocks and peahens wandering around - but we are all relaxing and resting up for a big day tomorrow (150 kms). |
